Reading

Many small pieces lead to a total picture.

Our reading series is "Storybook".  It is published by Harcourt Brace.  There will be many opportunities for you to help your child by going to the Harcourt website.  Please see the spelling and Vocabulary link on the curriculum page to view the weekly spelling and "Robust Vocabulary".  These are very important for your child to learn and to be able to apply to daily work.

We will be reviewing grammar, vocabulary and high frequency words

this week when the students return.  We have completed lesson 14.  We will

begin lesson 15 next week and get back on schedule with homework and spelling on Monday Jan. 9th.

We working on Theme 6

Please have your child read to you every night for 15 minutes.  If they are having difficulty, you can read a page, then they can read a page.

You can make your own reading games.

  • You will need a file folder, a pencil, markers, a die, and game pieces (such as a piece of cereal, penny, m&m).
  • Draw a two-inch-wide S-shaped path from one end of an open folder to the other.  Make horizontal lines to create 28 spaces.
  • Have your child use colored markers to write a letter (A to Z, in order) in each space.  They should leave two blanks where you can write fun instructions: "Fell in alphabet soup.  Go back two spaces."  or "Sing the ABC song and advance to M".
  • To play, roll the die and move that many spaces with your game piece. Then, say a word that starts wit the letter you land on (example: "elephant" for E).  Help your child by reminding them what sound the letter makes.  The first player to reach Z wins.  If you put spelling words in the spaces instead of letters, have them read the word then give you a definition or have them give you a rhyming word, opposite, or another word that means the same thing.
