    "Step Up to Writing"

Elements of a Good Paragraph

** Topic Sentence

  • What are you talking about.
  • Keep on topic throughout the whole paragraph.

** 3 Support sentences:

  • Write a sentence to follow each of 3 supporting details.
  • Remember to keep focused.
  • All of these sentences MUST relate back to the topic sentence.

** Must have a conclusion sentence:

        this restates the topic sentence.

Does your child complain about their hands being sore when they write?  Here is a fun way to build those important muscles in their hand.

  • Give your child a single-hole punch and let them make holes in scrap paper.  Have them squeeze wit the hand the write with.  (ake cleanup easier by having the punch the "holes" into a bowl.
  • Hold a bead race.  Each player gets tweezers and two small bowls; one with a dozen beads (or other tiny objects, can use cereal) and one that's empty.  Players use tweezers to transfer all their beads to empty bowls  The first one to finish wins.

Remember that there must be spaces between the words, proper use of capital letters at the beginning of the sentences, and use proper puncuation at the end of each sentence.
