Student AR Points
2010-2011 School Year
What is AR?
AR is a reading program used across the district K-12. Some of the books in the library are AR books. You will know an AR book because it will have a colored dot on the front and side of the book indicating the reading level for the book. Each AR book has a comprehension test available. In Kindergarten for many students AR is practicing listening comprehension. Our goal by the end of the year is for students to read independently and practice reading comprehension.
Does my child have to read the book to me?
Many of the books your child brings home will not be on their level. It is ok as these stories will make wonderful books for you to read aloud to your child. After reading to your child have them retell the story to you in their own words. If you feel they've missed out on key details turn to specific pages to revisit important parts. At the end of the year students will transition into reading to you.
How many times should I read the book to my child?
Books should be read and then retold a minimum of three times prior to taking the test. After you have read the book to your child please aks them questions about the story. When you feel they are ready to take a test you will fill out the log in their AR folder and return the AR folder and book to school. I will record their score on the log after the test.
How many books should my child read a month?
My goal is for every student to read and take at least two AR tests each month. I will send home a report indicating where they are with points and scores. For every test a child successfully passes they are awarded a certain amount of points. Students will not receive a “grade” for AR. It is simply practice to help build their listening and reading comprehension.
Why should I participate in AR with my child?
Research shows that children who are read to on a daily basis have higher success rates in reading fluency and comprehension as they develop into independent readers. Children who can retell a story including details become great writers as well.
Thank you for reading to your child each day! Together we can build a lifelong love of reading!
