Phonemic Awareness

Mrs. Tyler's Reading

"Phonemic Awareness can be done in the dark"

There are no letters for students to look at when doing phonemic awareness. It is all about listening for sounds, chunks of words, or number of words in a sentence. By building phonemic awareness students begin listening closely and understanding that sounds make up words. If students can hear the sounds that make up words they will be able to write words and eventually whole sentences as well as have a solid foundation of sounds to use when beginning to connect sound to symbol (reading).

Ways to build phonemic awareness:

We are beginning the year by listening for words in a sentence. We say a sentence, for example, The dog is black. Then we clap for each word in the sentence. From here we move to counting each word in the sentence. As we develop this skill we will be able to break a word into its chunks (or syllables) and eventually into individual sounds.
