Begin by stopping in the middle of reading to "recap" the story. This will make your child conscious of what they are reading. It will help them to gain meaning from the story.
Please practice retelling stories after you read them together at home. Also ask your child to tell you about the books that are read to them in school. Learning how to retell a story will build comprehension skills for your child.
